This was the first in a flurry of murals I painted with young girls in Union Hidalgo, Oaxaca as part of a weeklong workshop series. They designed it as a group!
Painted as part of Colectivo Binni Cubi’s mural series revitalizing the Zapotec language in Union Hidalgo.
I taught a week of mural painting workshops to local girls with Collective Binni Cubi and this was days 3-4. "Pobre Xhiñé", the catchphrase of a fellow named Ta Tino Camaron, alongside a portrait of his granddaughter crying. Pobre Xhiñé means "my poor little girl" in a combination of Zapotec and Spanish. Camaron means "Shrimp" in Spanish. Ta Tino Camaron had a tattoo of a shrimp on his arm. He lived on this block, and now his many many kids and grandkids do. The particular dialect of Zapotec that is spoken here is very infused with little sayings from particular neighborhood characters such as Mr. Shrimp.
